What is a keratin treatment?

Written By Sam Robinson

Keratin plays a major in your body, it's a protein and one of the main components of your hair, nails and skin. The keratin that makes up the cortex and cuticle of the hair can become damaged over time creating porous spots that leave hair frizzy, dry and hard to manage.

Having a keratin treatment will plug the porous spots creating a stronger, smoother hair shaft leaving hair more manageable with a healthier appearance.

There are a variety of treatments on the market from keratin enriched shampoos and DIY kits to in-salon treatments. A popular keratin treatment is a keratin straightening treatment, this semi-permanent straightening is designed for wavy or curly hair. To achieve this a liquid keratin solution is applied to the hair, the hair is then straightened using flat irons, this locks in the keratin leaving the hair straight for up to three months.
